Bankroll Management Fundamentals
Effective bankroll management is the foundation of long-term poker success. Your bankroll represents the money you've set aside specifically for poker play and should be kept completely separate from your living expenses. The fundamental principle is that your bankroll must be large enough to weather the natural swings and variance that occur in poker, regardless of skill level.
Professional players typically maintain a bankroll of at least 20-30 buy-ins for the stakes they're playing. For example, if you're playing $1/$2 no-limit hold'em with $200 buy-ins, a proper bankroll would be $4,000-$6,000. This buffer allows you to continue playing even during downswings without risking your financial security. Moving up in stakes should only happen once your bankroll has grown sufficiently—usually by 50% or more—to support the increased variance at higher levels.
